Applying for Left-Handed Scholarships (Left-Handers Day)

August 13th is Left-Handers Day[1], and what better way to celebrate than to learn more about some of the unique scholarship opportunities available to Southpaws?[2] You may have heard that there are many scholarships out there to be had, but you may not have thought that there were scholarships designed specifically for left-handers.

Types of Left-Handed Scholarships

There are scholarships open to all left-handers to apply, and then there are scholarships for specific groups of left-handers. Some scholarships are based on artistic talents, some on academic merit, some on gender and minority status, and some on leadership. So whether you are a left-handed artist, a left-handed musician, or a left-hander who excels in academia, there is likely a scholarship option available to you.

How to Apply for Left-Handed Scholarships

You will apply for a left-handed scholarship in the same way you would for any type of scholarship, which requires only a couple simple steps.

1. Start Your Search

Find scholarships designed for left-handers. There are popular apps to search scholarships based on set parameters. You could search the internet or even inquire with your school counselor to see if they know any that are available.[3]

2. Fill Out Your Application

You will need to fill out your application based on the instructions. Some require providing forms of documentation or financial need, while others may require essays. For the best odds of success, make sure to answer all questions completely and turn your application in by the deadline.

Why Are Left-Handed Scholarships Unique?

Left-handed scholarships are unique, just as those are who apply for them. Scholarships specifically for left-handers are harder to come by, likely because only about 10% of the population will rely predominantly on their left hand. Studies have shown the varying differences between right and left-handers, mainly in relation to the activity in their brain, which may sometimes make them more creative thinkers. Left-handed scholarships are a way to celebrate this uniqueness and help left-handers realize their dreams of college.

How Much Might You Get From a Left-Handed Scholarship?

As with any types of scholarships, left-handed scholarships come in a range of award amounts. Most of the scholarships will fall in the range of $500 to $3000 but may be combined with other scholarships and grant money to provide a greater amount toward your college tuition.
